Star Indian batter Virat Kohli suffered back-to-back ducks for the first time in his One-Day International (ODI) career, as India took on Australia in the second ODI at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday.
After winning the toss, Australia captain Mitchell Marsh chose to bowl first. The hosts made three changes, bringing in Alex Carey, Adam Zampa, and Xavier Bartlett. India went with an unchanged XI despite a seven-wicket defeat in Perth. With the surface providing seam and swing early on, Australia’s decision paid immediate dividends as India’s top order once again failed against the new ball.
Kohli walked out at the fall of Gill’s wicket, looking to steady India’s innings with Rohit Sharma. However, his stay lasted just four deliveries. Facing Xavier Bartlett, Kohli was trapped plumb in front by a delivery that nipped back sharply off a good length. Looking for a flick through midwicket, the veteran batter was beaten on the inside edge as the ball hit into his front pad, right in line with middle stump. Umpire Sam Nogajski wasted no time raising his finger, and the ball-tracking confirmed it would have hit the “middle of middle.” Kohli briefly consulted non-striker Rohit before deciding against a DRS review. As he walked back, Kohli raised his gloves to acknowledge the supporters.
This dismissal followed his first-innings duck in Perth, where he edged a Mitchell Starc outswinger to Cooper Connolly at backward point. With these two consecutive noughts, Kohli recorded the first instance in his 15-year ODI career of being dismissed for ducks in successive innings. The Adelaide Oval has long been one of Kohli’s favourite venues outside India. Across all formats, he has scored 975 runs here, the most by any visiting batter, surpassing West Indies legends Brian Lara (940) and Viv Richards (905).
