Match Overview

India’s vice-captain and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has reportedly been ruled out of the remainder of the England Test series after sustaining a fractured toe during the fourth Test in Manchester. The injury, which occurred on Day 1 of the match at Old Trafford, has led doctors to advise Pant a minimum of six weeks of rest and recovery, potentially ruling him out of the ongoing fourth and the following fifth Test at The Oval.

The moment occurred when Pant was batting on 37 when he suffered the injury. During the 68th over of India’s innings, the southpaw attempted a premeditated reverse sweep against pacer Chris Woakes. The ball took a faint under-edge and hit his right foot, immediately leaving him in pain. Pany dropped his bat, took off his gloves, and signaled to the dressing room as he collapsed on the ground in pain.

When the physio examined the foot, Pant was seen in discomfort, unable to put any weight on it. Notably, there was visible blood flow on his sock, and the foot had a huge swelling. Eventually, the batter was taken off the field on a buggy. The BCCI later confirmed that Pant had been taken to a nearby hospital for scans. According to The Indian Express report, a senior official revealed that the scan reports showed a fracture in the toe, and the 27-year-old has been ruled out for at least six weeks.

“The scan report showed a fracture and he is ruled out for six weeks. The medical team is trying to see if he can come out to bat again by taking a painkiller. He still needs support to walk though and chances of his batting looks very bleak,” a source in the BCCI confirmed to The Indian Express.

Dhruv Jurel expected to replace Pant in final Test

India, already suffering from a series of injuries including to Nitish Kumar Reddy, Akash Deep, and Arshdeep Singh ruled out due to various injuries, are now pushed back on the wall with another injury. With Pant out, Dhruv Jurel is expected to be added to the XI for the final Test as a wicketkeeping option. However, as per ICC rules, he cannot bat in Pant’s place unless there’s a concussion substitution.

Meanwhile, Pant has been in sublime form throughout the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, scoring 462 runs, the second-highest for India in the series. His twin centuries at Leeds and knock at Lord’s had kept India in the contest. Even in Manchester, his 72-run stand with Sai Sudharsan steadied the innings after the dismissals of Jaiswal and Gill. India ended Day 1 at 264/4 with Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur at the crease. England are expected to take the second new ball early on Day 2.
