Overview

Mumbai Indians (MI) faced a crushing defeat against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 12 runs on April 5 at the Ekana Stadium, Lucknow. It was a last-over thriller where MI failed to chase 22 runs in six balls. Despite having Hardik Pandya on the crease, the formidable side could not cross the finishing line, to chase down the 204-run target set by Lucknow.

MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene wasn’t pleased about the defeat and said that it was a ‘setback’ for the side. It was the bowling in the first innings which didn’t go in their favour. LSG registered a good total despite losing most of the middle-order batters within quick intervals.

Ace batter and vice-captain Suryakumar Yadav scored a magnificent 67 runs off just 43 balls, hitting nine boundaries and one six, but failed to take the game home. After his dismissal, the middle-order could not get a hang on the bowling attack, eventually costing the game to the five-time champions.

“I have to be honest, it is a setback. We probably made quite a few mistakes especially with the ball as well, we should have probably restricted them maybe 15–20 runs less and at the same time batting-wise we had the momentum even after losing early wickets. I put it down to us not being smart enough in certain situations and not being able to execute what needed to be executed,” he said after the game, as quoted by Cricbuzz.

“So we just need to go back. We had three away games, one home game so we’d love to win away matches, but now it’s up to us to really get our points on the board and then push through,” the former Sri Lankan cricketer added.

The head coach spoke about the mistakes MI have been making in the season. Their bowling needs to be upgraded, and the batters should take responsibility in the middle overs, according to the 47-year-old. These two prime changes are extremely important for MI to win their upcoming games, he reckoned.

“I think the first two games we did not have the rhythm, I think in Chennai and GT we got a bit outplayed, but here I think we’re back at what we’re doing best. I think our bowling needs a little bit of fine-tuning and obviously batting needs to execute and finish a game off,” he said further.
