Queensland’s Premier, David Crisafulli, announced a new $3.8 billion, 63,000-seater venue, which will be constructed after the Olympics and Paralympics in 2032. The new stadium will act as a multipurpose venue for sports like AFL and Rugby.
He claimed the Gabba had been a wonderful venue for years while also addressing the challenges faced by the stadium and the need to plan for the future. Crisafulli felt Brisbane and Queensland had to develop their infrastructure to host major series like the Men’s and Women’s Ashes Series, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and ICC events in the future.
“There is now the opportunity for Queensland to attract the world’s best cricket events, such as ICC events, men’s and women’s Ashes Series, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series between Australia and India, as well as hosting the BBL and WBBL in a new purpose-built stadium. Today’s decision gives us certainty after many years without clarity,” Crisafulli said while briefing the media, as per The Indian Express.

Queensland to Focus on Building a Multipurpose Stadium in Brisbane
For the 2025-26 season, the Gabba’s only confirmed international match was the Men’s Ashes match. There was no certainty over the stadium’s future, considering its challenges. Some reports claimed the Gabba could either undergo redevelopment or be replaced. The Queensland Premier confirmed the construction of a new stadium.
David Crisafulli felt their new decision would allow them to plan future events at the domestic and international levels with certainty. He advocated for building a multipurpose stadium for sports like AFL and Rugby to benefit the people of Queensland.
“This decision gives us certainty about venues and scheduling, which in turn allows us to ensure Brisbane hosts the very best possible international and domestic cricket. We strongly advocated building a stadium in Victoria Park together with Queensland Cricket, the AFL, and Brisbane Lions, and cricket will play a major role in ensuring this significant investment delivers long-term benefits for cricket fans and the people of Queensland,” Crisafulli concluded.
