Delhi Capitals Women beat Gujarat Giants Women by six wickets.
Cricket News
The Women’s T20 cricket is in its full gusto as the caravan of the Women’s Premier League (WPL 2025) moves ahead of Match 10. Notably, the fixture was played between Gujarat Giants Women (GJ-W) and Delhi Capitals Women (DC-W), at the renowned venue of M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, in Bengaluru.
Even before coming into this match, Giants have shown inconsistency this season as they won only one game out of the three games they have featured in the WPL 2025. After finishing with the Vadodara leg of the tournament, the side was hoping for a change of fortunes in Bangalore. However, their batting woes continued in the new venue as well as they managed to post a paltry total of 127.
Talking Points from Match 10 of WPL 2025:
1. Meg Lanning’s side exploits conditions to rattle Delhi
Interestingly enough, the venue is known for producing high-scoring games as the pitch often proves to be a batting paradise for the batters. Despite that, the DC skipper Meg Lanning won the toss and elected to take the field first. The decision proved quite right as GJ-W struggled to score freely and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Big players like Ashleigh Gardner, Laura Wolvaardt, Beth Mooney and Harleen Deol were expected to step up for the team but they failed to convert their starts into an impactful knock. Except for the opening game where Gujarat Giants scored 201, their batting has not been up to the mark. As a result, Gujarat ended up giving a meagre target to their opponent.
2. Shafali misses fifty, Jes Jonassen stars with bat
While chasing a low target of 128 runs, Delhi Capitals Women suffered an early jolt in the form of their skipper and opener Meg Lanning, who departed in the fourth over after Kashvi Gautam cleaned her up. Barring that, Shafali Varma from the other end played aggressively and made 44 runs off 27 balls. After Lanning’s departure, she was joined by another Australian in the form of the all rounder, Jess Jonassen.
The Aussie played a fiery unbeaten half-century (61* off 32 balls) knock to guide Delhi to a dominating win over Gujarat. Although Jemimah Rodrigues and Annabel Sutherland did not contribute much and got out in quick succession, an unfazed Jonassen carried on smoothly with her innings and did not allow the opponent to get back into the game ahead. As a result, Delhi Capitals convincingly beat Gujarat Giants Women by six wickets with 29 balls to spare. For her entertaining knock, Jes Jonassen was adjudged as the Player of the Match (POTM).
3. Delhi Capitals Women claim top spot in WPL 2025
With this win, Delhi Capitals Women climb up to take the top spot in the WPL 2025 points table while Gujarat Giants Women are languishing at the bottom of the points tally. Meanwhile, here is what the captains had to say about how the game panned out for their respective sides.
